Running the Rescue CD didn't cure the problem, but it did reveal that an essential system file had been deleted due to infection. After that, the system blue-screened and rebooted over and over. A second scan got past the cleanup step and requested a reboot. During G Data's cleanup phase Windows Explorer crashed. Thereafter the installed product ran and scanned without trouble.Īnother test ended in disaster. I downloaded the G Data rescue CD and successfully used it to clean up the system. One malware-infested test system crashed with a blue-screen error upon installation, possibly destabilized by the real-time protection system's partial removal of a threat. Once the update finishes the product prompts the user to run a scan. Note that even a free trial installation requires registration before it will update. Immediately after installation G Data wisely prompts the user to run an update. That finding is in line with my own tests, which require successful repair for full credit. The repair score was G Data's lowest in both the Windows 7 and XP tests, meaning it didn't do a great job cleaning up the malware it detected. G Data passed handily with 14.5 points under Windows 7 and 15 points under XP. For certification a product needed a total of 12 points. The same lab performed one-time tests to evaluate dynamic protection and performance impact last year G Data rated ADVANCED in both.Ī recently tested almost 20 security products under Windows XP and Windows 7, assigning each a score from 0 to 6 in three categories: protection, repair, and usability. The app scored ADVANCED+, the highest rating, in the most recent test of each type. G Data's most recent failure this August was caused by false positives, not by failing to detect the malware samples.Ī, a European testing lab, includes G Data in their periodic tests of on-demand virus cleanup and proactive non-signature detection. Virus Bulletin has given VB100 status to G Data in nine of the last ten Windows-based tests. BitDefender gets additional checkmark certifications from West Coast Labs for Trojan detection and general malware detection. Both labs certify BitDefender for virus detection and cleaning and also certify avast! for detection. G Data itself doesn't participate in testing by West Coast Labs or ICSA Labs, but component engines avast! and BitDefender do. If you choose to reduce the scan's priority the meter will let you see how the product's CPU usage goes down. You can really see usage go up during an antivirus scan using the default high process priority. Taking a cue from Norton AntiVirus 2011 ($39.99 direct, 4.5 stars) G Data's window includes a CPU Load meter that shows CPU resource usage overall for the system and usage specific to G Data. If the status icon isn't green, clicking the "Correct" button will bring the product back to full protection. A banner across the main window's top uses green, yellow and red icons to reflect security status. ![]() In this it's much like Double Anti-Spy and TrustPort. G Data focuses on its core tasks, scanning for viruses, blocking virus attacks, and managing updates. Best Hosted Endpoint Protection and Security Software.
